Philippine Cup finalists Talk ‘N Text and Powerade renew their rivalry as Petron Blaze and Alaska battle in a crucial tiff in an interesting double-header of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup Wednesday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
The Tropang Texters and the Tigers collide for the first time after the All-Filipino finals in the main game at 7:30 p.m.
The Aces and the Boosters, both tied in the team standings at 3-3, square off at 5:15 p.m.
Talk ‘N Text won the Philippine Cup finals in five games but the Texters know that Powerade is a different team now especially with Dwayne Jones manning the paint.
“Dwayne Jones really completes this team and a strong team just got a lot stronger,” said TNT head coach Chot Reyes whose team is coming off a shaky 113-106 overtime win against Barako Bull to stay on top of the standings with 4-1 mark.
“We must contain their Big 3 and try to figure out how to match Jones as well,” he added.
Reyes is referring to the Tigers’ deadly trio of Gary David, Marcio Lassiter and Jvee Casio, who are the main reasons why Powerade is having a successful campaign so far in the season.
David and Lassister netted 25 and 23 points respectively in the team’s 98-88 win over Petron last Saturday in Legazpi City. Jones had 22 points, 19 rebounds and three blocks and outplayed his counterpart Nick Fazekas.
Tigers head coach Bo Perasol said they must bring their A-game to have a chance against the Tropang Texters.
A win by Powerade (3-2) will forge a three-way for the top spot along with B-MEG.
In the opener, Alaska and Petron hope to get back on track for one of the spots in the top six as they both seek an important win.
The Aces are also coming off a loss, falling to Air21, 85-88.
