Rajko Toroman is back in the Philippines.

This time, the Serbian coach is taking on a new role as consultant for the basketball program of San Miguel Corporation.

“My contract is two years as consultant of all SMC teams. Priority will be the PBA teams,” said Toroman. The conglomerate bankrolls three teams in the PBA: B-MEG, Barangay Ginebra, and Petron Blaze, as well as the San Miguel Beermen squad in the ABL.

Prior to signing the deal with SMC, Toroman fielded offers from teams in Europe, but decided to go back to the Philippines in part because of the people’s passion for basketball.

“Of course, I am happy with the offer given to me [by SMC], but we will see how things work for me as consultant,” he said.

Toroman spent the past three years coaching the SMART-Gilas Pilipinas national program, leading the team to a fourth-place finish in the 2011 FIBA Asia Championship. His contract expired last October, and was not offered a new deal when he returned to the country last month to meet with top brass of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas.

That left the door open for SMC to sign the coach, who led Iran to victory in the 2007 FIBA Asia tilt that led to a berth in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
