Meralco snapped a four-game slump dating back to last conference as the Bolts pounced on the Petron Blaze Boosters’ lethargic game for a 105-83 rout in the PBA Commissioner Cup at the Cuneta Astrodome Wednesday night.
The Bolts pummeled the Boosters in the last three quarters as they broke into the win-column in the mid-season tourney after a losing debut versus the B-Meg Llamados Friday.
Import Jarrid Famous showed marked improvement from his initial game with the team, churning out 26points, 17 rebounds, three steals, two blocks and one assist in 38 minutes of action.
Mark Borboron had his breakout game in a Meralco jersey while Mac Cardona and Gabby Espinas got
their usual games as the Bolts dealt the Boosters their second loss in as many starts in the
Meralco coach Ryan Gregorio said the key was finding their edge against Petron.
“I have strong faith in my team despite losing a key player in Sol Mercado. I have the faith that ranged against a formidable foe in Petron, we can win if we can find our edge. We found it in ourquickness,” said Gregorio.
The Bolts, who failed to make it past the quarterfinals last conference, made a good use of their quickness, pulling the rug from under the Boosters with a fluid running game.
Meralco produced 25 fastbreak points as against Petron’s 14.
Borboron came through with a double-double game with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
The former Alaska Aces player also made a big impact on defense, holding Arwind Santos to two points – his lowest output in a game since limited to the same score in the last Commissioner’s Cup.
Santos, runner-up to Gary David in the Best Player of the Conference derby in the recent Philippine Cup, avoided going scoreless in draining in his lone basket with only four minutes left to play.
Cardona chipped in 16 points, six rebounds and three assists while Espinas contributed 13 markers and seven boards.
The Bolts established momentum in the second quarter, coming away with a key run to take the half at 56-39.
Famous and company toughened up on defense and pounced on the Boosters’ errors to break away from a slim 25-22 lead in the opening quarter.
The two teams engaged in a nip-and-tuck battle early on, figuring in seven deadlocks and the same number of lead changes.
The Boosters faded away in the second period while limited to 18 field-goal attempts, making seven. The Bolts, on the other hand, took 27 attempts, converting 13. (SB)
