Last night at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, Nonito Donaire captured the vacant WBO junior featherweight title with a commanding victory over Wilfredo Vazquez Jr., dropping the Puerto Rican in the process. Donaire registered a knockdown in the ninth round and overcame a strong effort from Vazquez in the second half of the fight to score the victory.
And in the HBO-televised main event, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. pounded out a unanimous decision in a grueling battle with worthy contender Marco Antonio Rubio. Chavez was a little busier and unleashed some wicked body shots, with both men bringing the crowd to its feet with heavy exchanges in the final two rounds.
While the performances of Donaire and Chavez Jr. weren’t flawless, it was entertaining stuff and both men move forward with their careers while enjoying their status as two of the game’s hottest names.
