MANILA, Philippines – Meralco coach Ryan Gregorio hopes their import Jarrid Famous will perform better when they play against Petron Blaze on Wednesday’s PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
The 6’11” Famous struggled in their 96-93 defeat to B-Meg last Friday.
“As an import, the challenge is for him to play at an optimum level the whole game. Famous played decent only after a woeful first half,” Gregorio said on PBA.ph.
Gregorio said Famous would have to be in his absolute best against a deadly team like Petron.
“Petron is always a tough match-up because of their bench depth. The addition of [import Nick] Fazekas made them all the more dangerous,” said Gregorio.
The Boosters are aching for a win especially after being edged by the Ginebra Gin Kings in a close game, 84-82, last Sunday.
Petron could have won if not for Jayjay Heltebrand’s winning shot near the end of regulation. Fazekas had 37 points and 18 rebounds in that game.
“Hopefully, our second game will give us a chance to stabilize. I thought we played hard against B-Meg. But when you play elite teams, you need to combine hard work with basketball intelligence,” said Gregorio.
Game time will be at 7:30 pm at the Cuneta Astrodome.
In the 5:30 pm curtain raiser, Barako Bull will go up against B-Meg Derby Ace.
Just like the Llamados the Energy is coming off a victory over Alaska last Friday.
Both teams will be gunning for win No. 2 to establish an early momentum in the mid-season conference.
