Donaire needs to climb weight to be PPV hit: Arum
MANILA, Philippines – Boxing promoter Bob Arum wants Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire Jr. to climb into more acceptable weight classes so that he can be more marketable to American fight fans.
"It's very hard to sell Americans 112, 115, 122, and 126 pounds," said Arum in Examiner.com. "There's very little money down on these weight classes."
Donaire is the current WBC and WBO bantamweight champion (118 pounds).
He will climb the super bantamweight class (122 pounds) next year to fight Puerto Rico’s Wilfredo Vazquez Jr.
Arum said that for Donaire to become a pay-per-view hit, he would soon need to fight as a super featherweight (130 pounds).
"It's easy to sell to the Americans the super featherweight, lightweight and welterweight fighters and up, simple as that."
