MANILA, Philippines – There's still a lot of things that must be done to improve the level of Philippine football, a German football coach said.
Eckhard Krautzun, who coached the Philippine football team in the 1991 Southeast Asian Games (SEAG), said one issue that must be addressed is the country’s exposure to football.
According to Soccer Central.ph, Krautzun was surprised to learn that some people he talked to in the Philippines didn’t know football superstars Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Another problem is lack of football fields. He said people must be given a chance to play the game themselves.
"We must construct more fields," said Krautzun.
Nevertheless, he admitted that the recent successes of the Philippine Azkals show that the country is headed in the right direction.
"There is no doubt that football is getting on the right track," said Krautzun.
He said Filipinos are more interested now in football, compared to 20 years ago when he was still coaching the national team.
