Nacho Beristain: Marquez will shock Pacquiao; Alvarez gets wrecked by Angulo

GUADALAJARA--Most of you gringos out there in Boxingland aren't aware of how outspoken Mexico's greatest trainer, Ignacio "Nacho" Beristain routinely is.

But, having known this member of TWO boxing halls of fame for decades, I have long known that Professor Beristain bites his tongue on no subject.

Even with my mangled espanol, sans a credible intrerpreter, I deduced that.

So it was when I mentioned Mexico's most popular and charismatic rising ring star and, no, I am not making reference to scion of the legend, Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr.

I put it bluntly to the Nacho Man before his latest world champion Juan Carlos Salgado took a hard fought decision and the vacant IBF junior lightweight title from Dominican Argenis Mendez Saturday night in a gym at the Autonomous University of Guadalajara.

(The count on how many world champs Beristain has tutored is either 17 or 23, depeding on who is counting. Let's just say Freddie Roach is the "Nacho Beristain of the USA" and be done with the topic.)

"I like Canelo Alvarez, he has talent," Beristain said of the redhaired welterweight from this big city.

"But Canelo, must steer completely clear of Alfredo Angulo. Angulo would destroy Canelo in no more than four rounds. This is a fight Alvarez must stay away from. Angulo would be too much for him."

Nacho has spoken.

In the wake of ther Salgado title victory, Beristain flew back to his gym in Mexico City, leavbing here ar dawn's early light on Sunday.

"Everything I do now is point to Juan Ma and to beating Manny Pacquiao on Nov. 12," Beristain told me at the airport here.

"The world may be shocked but Pacquiao will be defeated. He has a lack of focus and Juan Ma will take advantage of this. Being a fighter, a Congressman, a singer, all of this, will finally catch up to Manny.

"Pacquiao is a great one, yes, but no other fighter knows him, after 24 rounds, like my fighter does. You will see a great explosion by Marquez on this night."

Beristain has trained Juan Ma since the boxer was 13 years old.

Marquez is now age 37.
