Donaire camp updates: Donaire looks for new trainer

Breaking News: While I was at the Nonito Donaire, Jr. camp in San Mateo a couple of week ago, I noticed some familiar faces missing in action, such as trainers Robert Garcia and Jonathan Penalosa. Donaire told me that his two trusted cornermen should be on their way to rejoin camp soon.

Garcia, who serves as Donaire's head trainer, will definitely be back in camp to help break down the game plan for Omar Narvaez in New York on October 22, but due to some uncontrollable factors, Penalosa is not going to be back in camp.

The Donaires broke the news to me that they are looking for a replacement after Penalosa's US working visa was denied, which disallows him from being able to join the team in San Mateo, California for the Narvaez camp. This will be the first time Penalosa won't be part of Donaire's camp since the Raul Martinez in Manila back in April of 2009. Penalosa's main responsibility is holding the mitts for Donaire.

Some names Donaire is considering as Penalosa's replacement include his father Nonito Donaire, Sr., who is also currently busy training his brother Glen for his comeback fight, former world champion and Zab Judah's mitts coach Morris East, and a couple of other local trainers in the area.

Donaire is currently working hard to lose some added pounds he put on after a prolonged layoff since beating Fernando Montiel in February, thanks in large to a contractual dispute with his promoter Top Rank after ill-advisedly signing a deal with rival Golden Boy Promotions.
